theodoric the first ascends the throne as king of ala mhigo. proclaiming himself the divine ruler of ala mhigo, his right to the throne was stated to be the divine rule of nymeia herself. it was at this time that he also banned the worship or likeness of any other god and executed any who defied his uncontested rule.
aythe marquardt is born

with the empire’s new airships, the garlean empire now stood ready to resume its invasion of othard. long considered unassailable, emperor galvus bid his airships fly over the skatay range and attack the kingdom of dalmasca from the north, circumventing its defenses. major cities fell in the blink of an eye. nalbina fortress, dalmasca’s last bastion of defense, raises a magical barrier to stall the empire’s approach.
legatus noah van gabranth of the ivth imperial legion begins a bloody, six-month siege to nalbina fortress. tides finally turn against the dalmascans in the final battle of nalbina, wherein prince rasler and princess ashelia were found among the 70,000 dead on the dalmascan side.
after the massacre, dalmasca’s regent relinquishes the crown to the empire and supposedly succumbs to illness soon after, ending the royal b’nargin line after a thousand years of rule. rumors of suicide and assassination circulate throughout the annexed kingdom.
rabanastre became a key staging ground for imperial forces moving into nagxia, the kingdom quickly being annexed into two regions: the deserts of the rabanastre capital to the north in dalmasca superior, and the jungles to the south in dalmasca inferior, with lea monde as its capital.
it takes three years for garlemald to subjugate the whole of nagxia. despite the nagxians being made up of several disparate clans, their guerrilla tactics and familiarity with their jungle home made the regions occupation difficult, until garlemald began employing small, elite mobile units.

ancient allagan relics are unearthed in newly annexed imperial territories. while garlemald’s engineers were never able to replicate the fundamentals of the allagan devices, the secrets gleaned from the ancient machina progressed garlemald’s technology by leaps and bounds.
garlean engineers are successful in using ceruleum engines to reanimate a number of these uncovered allagan machina. some of these ancient war-machina begin appearing on the front lines.
mito is born.

theodred, nephew of theodoric, is sent away to the temple of the fist to protect him from his uncle's purges. he is later known by the name widargelt, being raised by the temple monks.
the conflict between king theodoric and the fist of rhalgr intensifies. in the name of quelling the insurrection, the king leads a vast army to the temple of the fist, razing it to the ground and massacring its disciples.
theodorac earns the title: the king of ruin and labels any followers of the fist of rhalgr as heretics, starting a crusade to hunt them down.
at nineteen, raubahn aldynn is ordered to suppress an angry mob as an officer of the ala mhigan army. he earns wide renown when he succeeds in the task without spilling a drop of blood.
fearing eminent invasion, doma’s sovereign requests aid from hingashi, however, after witnessing the fate of dalmasca, the bakufu elects to remain neutral.
rather than reinforcing doma’s castles and strongholds throughout yanxia, lord kaien gathered his strength along the dairyu moon gates, reinforcing their wards with geomancy and ninjutsu to disrupt the aetherial currents and send incoming garlean airships crashing to the earth below. ground assaults were likewise repelled with a united doman army fighting alongside several auspices, including tamamo gozen.
despite repelling the first wave, the garleans redoubled their efforts and soon gained a foothold on the one river with the overnight construction of castrum fluminis. realizing he could not hope to win out the coming siege, lord kaien surrendered doma to the empire to avoid more bloodshed.

with the remaining lands of othard quickly being annexed, garlemald turns its full attention towards aldenard and the xivth legion begins advancing on the ala mhigan border, drawing attention away from baelsar’s ongoing political subterfuge in the region.

raubahn is assigned to the border forces as the xivth legion closes in. he and his comrades undertake a series of diversionary maneuvers which succeed in keeping the imperial forces at bay.

cid garlond and nero scaeva enter garlemald’s magitek academy, their fiercely competitive rivalry fueling the imperial military with countless new inventions, many of which would come to be used against ala mhigo.

garlean infiltrators incite civil war in ala mhigo, leading to a rebellion of the people against theodoric, the king of ruin, after five years of paranoid tyranny and fear. the kingsguard, also known as the corpse brigade, is complicit in the uprising, ignoring their liege's orders and opening the gates of the palace to the revolutionaries.
seizing the opportunity amidst the confusion and political upheaval, the xivth legion subjugates and annexes ala mhigo with little resistance. in the wake of king theodoric’s suicide, the xivth legion puts down the ala mhigan revolutionaries in a most brutal fashion.
aythe marquardt, aged 11, escapes and surrenders herself to ala mhigan rebels.
fearing a rapid invasion after the fall of eorzea’s greatest military power, ala mhigo, the remaining city-states attempt to bolster their defenses for the coming war. as most of these nations previously relied on sellswords or city guard rather than standing militaries, drafting and training professional soldiers began in earnest. this left many sellswords and mercenaries without work and many turned to banditry.
a famed lominsan mercenary leader by the name of lodewicus the leal establishes the adventurers’ guild, an organization for the displaced sellswords to find work bettering the realm and its smallfolk. the guild acted as an intermediary, finding capable takers for a variety of tasks submitted by townsfolk-in-need. the guild quickly establishes branches lead by prominent leaders in ul’dah and gridania.
the mountain village of ferndale is laid to waste by a recently awakened nidhogg. ser alberic bale, the azure dragoon, forces the great wyrm to retreat. he adopts in estinien, a survivor of the attack, as his ward.
xaela refugees flee garlean subjugation in othard.
heyao is born.

nago, at fourteen summers, begins joining trade expeditions to the west as part of an armed merchant armada.
raubahn, now twenty and seven, arrives in the sultanate only to be mistaken for an imperial spy. he is imprisoned by the brass blades and forced to fight in the gladiator pits.

the adventurers’ movement was not warmly received by all. with the flood of new adventurers entering the cities, many smallfolk found their jobs and livelihoods taken over by these hired workers. this compounded ul’dah’s unemployed ala mhigan refugee crisis, heightened tensions with foreign poachers in gridania, and guilds across the realm reported a noticeable decline in the quality of their goods.
to address the impending threat of a garlean invasion, and the eorzean alliance is formally inaugurated by the nations of limsa lominsa, ul’dah, gridania, and ishgard - ishgard boasting the largest military presence of the four.
the twins alphinaud and alisaie are born to house leveilleur.

at twelve summers, mito is accepted into the magitek academy garlemald and relocates to the imperial capital.
after amassing their forces in ala mhigo, garlemald finally pushes south into eorzea, seeking to lay claim to silvertear lake in mor dhona. the battle of silvertear skies is waged. the agrius, flagship dreadnaught of the xivth legion, is dispatched to mor dhona where it is assailed by the ancient wyrm, midgardsormr. the agrius crashes in mortal combat with the wyrm, and the legion is forced to retreat.
in the massive explosion of aether from silvertear lake, the first eorzean primals are summoned from the fears of the beast tribes. from then on, the tribes learn to summon these primals repeatedly against their enemies. the echo begins manifesting in countless individuals across the realm after reportedly seeing a “starshower” in the sky.
the xivth legion postpones the eorzean campaign and proceeds with the construction of baelsar's wall on the border of the black shroud and gyr abania to defend their land against potential incursions by the beastmen and their gods.
seeking a method to defeat eorzea’s primals, the emperor gives the okay for midas nan garlond’s and nael van darnus’s “meteor project,” seeking to use the power of the lesser moon, dalamud, as a weapon against eorzea. their first test site is bozja, the largest commercial hub in othard.
on the continent of othard, grand minister midas nan garlond conducts the first field test of the meteor project at the citadel bozja. a massive quantity of energy is released from dalamud, obliterating the tower and the surrounding city, causing heavy casualties. mito loses her family in this event. garlemald attempts to cover up this “bozja incident” but it is impossible. fear spreads throughout othard.
nael van darnus takes her failure out on the othardians, worsening conditions there. the first whispers of far eastern resistance begin.
having witnessed the destruction his magitek inventions visited upon ala mhigo and the obliteration of an entire region at the hands of his father, cid nan garlond and several of his engineers defect from the empire. in eorzea, cid founds the garlond ironworks and readies the eorzean alliance for war by creating magitek enhanced weapons and airships.
gaius van baelsar creates the crania lupi, children of ala mhigan dignitaries born during the occupation and raised as “garlean” citizens, with all rights afforded them. once of age, these children were trained as soldiers and made to collect the tax on annexed peoples, one-fifth of each month’s earnings. as the livelihoods of many a gyr abanian had been destroyed by the empire’s invasion, many were unable to pay the tithe.
xivth legion engineers begin testing a new chemical weapon, “black rose”, on eorzean prisoners of war. the project was eventually shut down by gaius van baelsar.
after five years of preparation, the sharlayan residents of the dravanian hinterlands abandon their colony to return to the old world in a mass exodus.
xaela refugees attempt to settle in coerthas and adopt the nomadic ways of their ancestors, but are slaughtered by zealous and ignorant ishgardians, who mistake them for the forces of the dravanian horde.

unwilling to divert their forces away from the dragonsong war and the most recent awakening of nidhogg any longer, the holy see of ishgard withdraws from the eorzean alliance, closing its gates to all but its temple knights.
limsa lominsa, ul’dah, and gridania remain an alliance in name only. the nations disband their drafted armies, leaving countless scores of infantry without work. many of these soldiers are drawn to the growing popularity of the adventurers’ guild, thus begins an almost decade-long time period known as the age of adventure.

mito, at eighteen summers, is conscripted into the imperial army to serve as architectus and is given the title jen.

imperial dreadnaughts of the xivth legion begin shooting down airships over eorzean skies. garlemald increases airship patrols over their annexed nations. hostilities come to a head when a dreadnaught of the xivth legion opens fire and shoots down a highwind skyways airship transporting civilian passengers is shot down.
between dravanian attacks and imperial dreadnaught patrols, highwind skyways suspends all regular airship service indefinitely. flights become limited to instances of “extraordinary circumstance.”

raubahn achieves an unprecedented thousand victories in the arena. he then purchases the coliseum with his prize money and earns himself a seat on the syndicate.
at the coliseum, the guildmaster of the gladiators' guild loses his life in a fixed bout that shocks the nation. in the wake of the incident, the popular gladiator aldis, known as the sword of nald, is banished from ul'dah.
at the age of twenty, minfilia founds the path of the twelve, that those who possess the power of the echo might come together and explore how their powers might be wielded for the common good.

the empire resumes their advance into eorzea under nael van darnus and the viith legion.

garlean airships begin air-dropping propaganda linkpearls upon the free city-states of eorzea. the empire promises its full military protection, on the condition the eorzean city-states take up arms against the beast tribes and their primals.
nael van darnus and her viith legion leave the eastern theater and join van baelsar in ala mhigo, driving the slaves there to redouble their military efforts. the viith and xivth legions harry the city-states, cutting off trade routes in and out of eorzea. trade between the east and eorzea begins to dwindle.
unable to repel garlean encroachment upon the black shroud any longer, the newly appointed elder seedseer of gridania, kan-e-senna, appeals to gridania’s former allies for aid and urges the nations of ul’dah and limsa lominsa to reform the grand companies of eld. the city-states of eorzea reform the eorzean alliance and declare war against garlemald.
the second incarnation of the meteor project comes to fruition in the recently garlean-occupied mor dhona. dalamud descends upon eorzea. the xivth legion retreats to ala mhigo to crush ala mhigan resistance there. the viith legion entrenches itself in mor dhona, sending out cohorts to attack the city-states.
xivth legatus gaius van baelsar warns the eorzean alliance of meteor, and of the tenacious hold dalamud has over van darnus’s mind. led by flame commander jakys ryder, storm commander r’ashaht rhiki, and serpent commander quinquerol flutaint, the grand companies scramble to assault castrum novum and destroy the lunar transmitter beckoning the lesser moon. the transmitter is destroyed, but viith legion legatus nael van darnus escapes. dalamud continues to fall.
using allagan technology found in the fields of glory in coerthas, van darnus rent a portion of the land from the firmament to become a beacon for dalamud in the sky. this, the rivenroad, became the viith legatus’s last battlefield. a group of adventurers, led by cid nan garlond, flew to the island and killed nael van darnus, but it was far too late for dalamud to be stopped.
the archons of the circle of knowing infiltrate occupied gyr abania in an attempt to assist those ala mhigans who seek asylum abroad, but many lives are lost when the garleans catch wind of the defection.
while smuggling people out of ala mhigo, yda hext was killed by garlean soldiers. her younger sister lyse convinced yda's partner papalymo totolymo to let her assume yda's identity to continue her sister's work.

baelsar’s xivth legion pushes into eorzea on multiple fronts, building castrums in preparation for another invasion. however, all further aggression halts as first garlean emperor solus zos galvus’s health sharply declines.
in dalmasca, a resistance uprising known as the barheim incident claims scores of imperial colonists’ lives. in response, the xivth legion returns to the royal city of rabanastre. under livia sas junius’s command, suspected rebels were hunted down and slaughtered without trial, earning the tribunus the title: “the witch of dalmasca.”

the matsudaira clan is comprised of renowned carpenters accredited with the construction of various shrines, temples, and castles throughout the island of koshu. using geomancy and secretive, ancient techniques, their elaborate yet sturdy constructions earned them great renown and wealth. while they did not personally hold seats in the imperial court, they have a history of serving the capital as chief architects. the matsudaira had once united under the same banner; now they stand divided into two major branches, komasa-ke古松家 and nagahira-ke永平家, with a total of six clans in their ranks: the nashiro, kira, and yokoi ally themselves with the komasa while the tsuruoka, udono, and oshikamo are affiliated with the nagahira. among them, the tsuruoka is the oldest branch, while the nashiro is considered the main family.

the komasa are accredited with propelling the matsudaira clan to its status today. entrepreneurial to the point of egoistic, they persistently sought a more glorious future—even if it meant through more nefarious means. the matsudaira reached its apex of wealth when hingashi was engulfed by blood and strife, accumulating riches from constructing forts and castles to house various clans as they waged war against each other.

🏮⠀—⠀ RESIDENCE

the building of the compound was a multi-generation endeavor, construction clusters arose one by one. in total, there are 231 courtyards and 2,078 rooms on the site, situated across 48,400 square yalms and divided into four wings. the four wings, positioned along the north-south and east-west axis, are connected by corridors surrounding the central courtyard and garden, which, by itself, covers 1,435 square yalms. the buildings positioned to the north and facing the south housed the tōjō, the main family, while the eastern buildings were home to the kira and the western belonged to the yokoi. the buildings that faced north were where the clans gathered together or hosted guests.

🏯⠀—⠀ NASHIRO 名城

considered the main branch of the komasa, and, in most cases, of the matsudaira. during the age of blood, they were known as the tōjō 東城 due to their allegiance to the emperor of the east, and, after the fires of war settled into dust, they were bestowed their current name, nashiro 名城.

🕸️⠀—⠀ YOKOI 横井

the yokoi are one of the few clans with origins not based on a bloodline but a blood oath between sworn brothers and sisters. it's said that some of its founders traveled to the capital city from their humble villages in search of a brighter future, while others were smuggled in from othard to serve as cheap labor—both having been met with ostracism and forced to live outside the laws and norms of society. shamed for their origins, they were collectively referred to as yokoi, the “perverse well,” and their family names—among them: doi土井, yata八田, asu阿蘇, eto江藤, and nukaga額賀—became hereditary statuses of untouchability for generations. they struggled to make ends meet in occupations that society considered "defiling," including butchers, tanners, and undertakers. when the imperial mandate to cease the slaughter and consumption of animals was put into effect, they took their business to the black market. experiencing some semblance of wealth for the first time, they went on to dabble in other illicit activities such as peddling stolen goods and gambling. as they rose in power and prominence, their activities expanded into more serious criminal fields—drug trafficking, blackmail, extortion, prostitution, assassination—as time goes by and they formed organized groups specializing in their designated areas of expertise, as well as based on personal morals; not everyone agrees with distributing somnus, but everyone can agree on money. the yokoi, by technicality, is the clan with the longest history among the komasa-ke, yet it is youngest within matsudaira-shi: its initiation into the clan was a recent venture, finalized through a political marriage.

due to differences in values, the nagahira parted ways with the komasa and have since disappeared from the realm for many generations. having resigned to a shrouded realm within daitenzan, the nagahira secluded themselves from the rest of the world, only descending the mountain on rare, mandated occasions. to leave mountain and re-enter society meant banishment, and memories are manipulated in order to guard the nagahira's secrets. however, all who leave are destined to return in their twilight years to find peace before death.

👣⠀—⠀ LOCATION

⛰️⠀—⠀ SHIRETOKO 知床半

"the end of the earth" • surrounded by thick canopies, waterfalls, and karst formations where the original limestone bedrock layers are being eroded. numerous streams spring from underground fissures along the lower levels. almost always shrouded in mist or fog. short summers and long winters.

🌲⠀—⠀ JUKAI 樹海

the sea of trees, located in the northern foothills of daitenzan. eerily quiet, little wildlife can be seen or heard. thriving upon thousands of years of hardened lava, the rocks below the volcanic soil absorb sound. the maze-like vegetation is extremely dense; trees, tall and numerous, create canopies that prevent the sun from heating up the forest and letting in too much light—even in the middle of the day—, blocks out the wind and rain, and limits any mounted transport. travelers often feel a sense of uneasiness, and would actively avoid going through the forest, especially in winter, when the mist and fog that accompany the forest thickens even further.

🏘️⠀—⠀ DAYAN 大硯

built deep within jukai—about a day's walk from the edge of the forest—and along the base of daitenzan, dayan is the closest town to the nagahira settlement. surrounded and divided by rivers, lakes, and waterfalls, dayan's foundation is an orderly system of waterways and bridges dividing six districts, linked by old-fashioned stone bridges with round arches. in the older parts of town, the buildings are set along the banks of the canals. despite its tranquil ambience and scenic beauty, travelers are infrequent. during the age of blood and strife, dayan became home to many who have been displaced by the fires of war, but has since mostly received monks, priests, and pilgrims as visitors and guests due to its proximity to daitenzan.

💬⠀—⠀ LANGUAGE

the nagahira speak a unique language with similarities to the old auri tongue and ancient doman in ritual, song, and their day-to-day lives. while encouraged to learn modern hingan and common, many of the older generations do not.

🥢⠀—⠀ CUISINE

characterized by its sweetness and generous use of aromatics—ginger, garlic, coriander, and green onion—and spices—turmeric, black pepper, fenugreek, prickly-ash, and black cumin—in a diet heavy on noodle dishes, hearty braises and stews, dumplings, and dairy.

to eat well is to consume vitality itself and partake of the essence of the world.

🎋⠀—⠀ NAMES

the nagahira believe in the power of names, that one's self can be manipulated or led astray with improper use. as such, those born or initiated into the nagahira have at least three names, given at various points of their lives: at birth in life, and in death. each person's name dies with its owner; the repetition of a name in different generations has no relation to any preservation of the memory of an older person. birth names, along with assigned mantras, are words that have been offered to the heavens for their blessing and protection, and, thus, are never to be spoken and only known by the high seers, who have also instilled a natural defense against exposing mantra in the deepest parts of the subconscious. the name of nagahira-ke or nagahira in itself is but a formality; many of its current members forgo the notion of surnames entirely, and most prefer to refer to themselves as kene-pok—"those beneath the alder" in their native tongue or saga 嵯峨 when traveling. the komasa, in contrast, are referred to as yaiikire no apkash—"those who walk alone"—or sak koporo—"those who do not grow".

🕰️⠀—⠀ TIME

the nagahira follow an archaic twelve bell time measurement system that the rest of hingashi had abandoned in favor of the twenty-four bell eorzean system. suns were divided into six bells of daylight and six bells of darkness—lengths of each changing with the season—and, instead of midnight, the day began at daybreak. the time was announced via the striking of the ōgane, and its deep resonance reached every corner of shiretoko without fail.

📿⠀—⠀ CULTURE

the nagahira live and abide by the three treasures, the five phases that were believed to compose the universe, and the eight trigrams of divination. they hold reverence for the fushko-okai-utara—"the ancients"—deities who reside in all things and are more commonly known as kami in the rest of the far east, and for nature. they especially pay respects to birds—shinish-oran-guru, "they who came down from the highest clouds"—and sea life—repun-kontukai, "servants of the sea"—respectfully.

three treasures
三宝

essence, energy, and soul are the three treasures that comprised a human being, the life vigor of an individual. they are referred to together as ramat, and is the nagahira's way of defining aether.essence is vitality, power of the bloodline—the very basis of the mortal body. energy is the origin of heaven and earth, channeled through meridians and acupoints. the soul is the primordial spirit—the marriage of spirit and will.

five phases
五行

comprised of fire, water, wood, metal, and earth, the five phases are used to describe cosmic cycles and the state in nature, with each phase comprising of around seventy-three (73) days each. based on a particular directional energy flow from one phase to the next, the interaction can be expansive, destructive, or exhaustive. a proper knowledge of each aspect of energy flow enables the nagahira to apply certain rearrangements of energy. wood is a period of growth, which generates vitality. fire is a period of swelling flowering, brimming with fire and energy. earth is the in-between transitional season periods, marked by moderation and fruition. metal is a period of harvesting and collecting. water is a period of retreat, where stillness pervades.

八卦

the eight trigrams are eight symbols used to represent the fundamental principles of reality: heaven, earth, thunder, water, mountain, wind, flame, and marsh. each depicted with three lines that are either broken or unbroken. used in combination with each other, a total of sixty-four (64) hexagrams and interpretations can be created, and each member of the nagahira have eight assigned to them by the high seer and tattooed onto their backs. heyao's are the wanderer, the gentle wind, the dwelling flame, the returning maiden, the still mountain, the darkening of the light, contemplation, and the inner truth.

every ritual begins with the mantra: abe rui, rera rui, apto rui—"to burn as fire, to blow as wind, to come down as rain."

daily gatherings at sunrise and sunset—comprised of song and dance—to revitalize spiritual energies. participation is optional but encouraged.

all members of the nagahira-ke go through a long series of sacred tattooing rituals as part of their transition into adulthood. rather than needles and ink, nagahira-ke tattoos involve carving the skin with ceremonial knives covered in birch charcoal and channeled with aether, and closing the slits with antiseptics made of boiled ash bark. the process begins early—at age six—and start with small cuts to help ease the youth into longer, more painful sessions with each passing season. the first parts of the tattoo—the nagahira-ke emblem, and the individual's personal hexagrams and mantras—are located along the base of the spine and are prioritized because they must be finished before the scales start growing there and they are essential to both the physical and magical prowess and capacity of the recipient; the nagahira-ke emblem and hexagrams bestow upon the individual great power while the mantras limit its usage.

the high seer, immortal sage, child of the blue comet

a whale auspice of ethereal beauty, melodic voice, and immense magical prowess, all ancient magicks, rituals, and ordinances of the matsudaira are originated by her hand. with her many years twinkling behind her like distant stars, she was a court dancer turned onmyōji who had personally served the imperial family until a dispute over succession ousted her from her post as a civil servant fifteen hundred years ago. refusing to involve herself in the chaos that had erupted, she fled to daitenzan, never to return, and, for generations, she has rescued abandoned children from the forests at the base of the mountain and took them in as pupils. affectionately called vuvuwa avayan—grandmother.

born shō no sōkon to the tsuruoka clan, cigan won renown as a talented carpenter specializing in shrines and temples and became the first to be bestowed the name of matsudaira. it's said that he was blessed by the kami when he returned a stranded whale to the sea.

she took great pains to feign immunity—clocking the hours, concealing shadows, sighing only to empty rooms. the ultimate reprieve from her shackles was in slumber and dreams—where she always found herself under the same night sky void of stars, in the same forest of willows, bathed in moonlight and an endless sea of mist—yet the way they inevitably end fills her with dread. first she is visited by shadowy figures—faceless yet somehow familiar—who swim in her vision and whisper in her ears things she does not understand, followed by he surrounding fog becomes flame and swallow her as if she was mere paper. she awakes with a blossoming pain throughout her body: pain blossoming inside her head, her eyes weak and weary with dried tears, her heart beating like a drum and filled with an emotion she cannot place—bittersweet, as if she had been frostbitten and was slowly embraced by warmth.
